What will the apprentice be doing?

Responsibilities - to include but not limited to:

  • To offer support to Commissioning and Water Treatment Engineers. Working closely with your supervisor and the engineering team, following the correct procedures to BSRIA guidelines and when needed CIBSE Codes A & W
  • To compile correct computer generated test sheets and engineers’ reports using our master templates, initially with some training and guidance as required
  • Always wear company clothing and appropriate PPE
  • Help with producing Risk Assessments and Method Statements required for individual projects
  • Proficient with use of Office suite programs (Word, Excel spreadsheets). Computer literate
  • Some understanding of building, engineering, M & E industry desired
  • Carry out all reasonable tasks or projects as requested
  • To follow instructions as given by project managers / lead engineers
  • To abide to company rules, Health and Safety and Quality policies
  • Ensure employee handbook has been read and understood fully
  • Always behave respectfully towards customers, work colleagues and office staff
  • Always promote a professional company image
  • Never make a promise we cannot keep

Key Tasks:

  • Performing air and water balancing and HVAC systems validations to CIBSE Codes and BSRIA Guidelines, always with a positive outlook and can do attitude, proactive troubleshooting
  • To assist the commissioning and water treatment teams when required
  • To follow the correct procedures for setting up and flushing closed low and chilled water systems to BSRIA guidelines
  • Understanding L8 water compliance
  • Be willing to participate in any company training days / programs provided to improve development
  • Be prepared to travel and stay away as necessary to complete your work and always look for opportunities to improve standards
  • Follow company processes relating to all aspects of your work, showing respect to all staff and colleagues
  • Report any issues to your project manager / lead engineer
  • To generate test sheets and reports in a timely manner

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

  • The apprentice will be working towards the Engineering Technician Level 3 apprenticeship standard
  • After a period of foundation skills and technical knowledge development all apprentices will be required to achieve the following qualifications: Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence) Level 2 Diploma in Machining (Foundation Knowledge). After a further period of skills and technical knowledge development all apprentices will be required to achieve the following qualifications: Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence) - Machining. Level 3 Diploma in Machining (Development Knowledge)
  • College attendance will be at the Colchester Institute - Colchester Campus  1 day per week in the years thereafter

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

  • Eventually we would like to see the roles progress into full Engineering Roles. You would become a full time commissioning or water treatment engineer, working on our clients’ sites with supervision until you would be confident and learned enough to perform certain tasks autonomously. You would learn to perform air and water balancing and HVAC systems validations to CIBSE Codes and BSRIA Guidelines, you would have a full understanding of technical terms - this will form an important part of the learning process
  • The right person, if proved to be successful in the apprentice position, would be offered a full time position within our team

Things to consider

This is site based work (either train or lift with the supervisor engineer in the company vehicle). The role will involve you spending most of the time on our clients’ sites with a supervisor engineer/project manager, being trained on all aspects of the HVAC commissioning/Water Treatment & Water Hygiene. You will be traveling to and from the sites on a daily basis, depending on where the work is required. You will be expected to fill out the correct paperwork and help with preparation of test sheets, therefore a great attention to detail is a must as is a proficiency in the use of computers and standard office packages (email, word, excel, Dropbox). Full support for training and guidance offered.
