We are looking for an enthusiastic person who has a passion for food and a willingness to learn. The nursery environment is fun and challenging and we need a special kind of person to fit into our team to support the chef and the team and be willing to work hard. You will support the chef in the preparation and cooking of a healthy balanced diet for children aged 0 to 5 years and maintain hygiene and cleanliness within the kitchen and dining area to a 5* standard.

What will the apprentice be doing?

Responsible To:

  • Nursery Chef/Catering Manager
  • Nursery Manager

Duties and responsibilities:

  • To support the cooking and prepare selection of hot and cold meals, snacks and puddings with accordance to companies menu
  • Support the education of children with activities around healthy eating, cooking activities etc.
  • To contribute to the hygiene and cleanliness within the kitchen area, working with all the health and safety guidelines and legislation in accordance with Safer Food and Better Business
  • Understand and follow appropriate risk assessments and record keeping linked to the kitchen environments
  • Develop a knowledge and understanding of budgeting and ordering, monitor and stocktake foods and housekeeping supplies
  • Following the company’s relevant policies and procedures
  • Developing good relationship with our parents
  • Supporting room staff with meals times and helping to serve food, encouraging children to eat and always seek to improve the quality of service
  • To have a knowledge of food allergens and safe food preparation and meet all the dietary requirements of the children
  • To occasionally attend and cater for any out of working hours events and staff meetings
  • To understand your responsibilities for child protection and safeguarding procedures and ensure they are always followed
  • To undertake any further training and development needed to carry out the role, keep up to date with apprenticeship training and have a good attitude to self-development and progression

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

An apprenticeship is a job with training which enables you to earn while you learn.

The apprentice standard consists of core knowledge, skills and behaviours relevant to the job role.

It is delivered in partnership with the employer via a blended approach and the apprentice will spend 20% of their time in off the job training during paid working hours.

Prior to completion, the apprentice will undertake a multiple choice on demand test, a practical observation and a professional discussion, a pass or distinction is achievable.

Functional Skills, maths and English, are an integral to completion of the apprenticeship. The apprentice will achieve these qualifications as part of the apprenticeships, if not previously gained.

Upon completion of the apprenticeship the apprentice will gain their Level 2 Production Chef qualification.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

We hope that the apprentice will train with us and be interested in a role with us at the end of their training.  There will be opportunities to carry on with training and progression.

Things to consider

DBS is essential and following safeguarding rules and reporting is essential We would not expect long hours, only contracted hours and there needs to be flexibility to travel at times to gain further experience and knowledge
