You will be responsible for the development and delivery of existing and new retail solutions to address mobility, high volume systems and big data challenges. Working within Agile methods/frameworks you will take an active role in daily stand up, planning, retrospective meetings as well as using pair programming and techniques like TDD and CI, CD.

What will the apprentice be doing?

Flooid is a global provider of IT software products & solutions for the retail & hospitality industries with over 140 blue-chip clients in 57 countries, including John Lewis, One Stop, The Range, Dollar General (US) & Woolworths (South Africa). We write, assure, release and cloud host our own software for the in-store selling experience, this includes any point-of-sale, self-checkout, mobile app and self-scan device.

Our global Software Engineering team work on Product or Project based development, for either a domain area of our product or on client specific solutions.

As an apprentice software engineer you'll be developing the knowledge and skills to:

  • Work as part of a cross functional, passionate agile project team to ensure quality is driven into the heart of the development process from requirements definition through to delivery
  • Support in the production of brand-new solutions, solutions based upon third-party applications or solutions that interact with existing legacy systems
  • Use programming languages and tools (generally) around the Java platform
  • Work with Business Analysts to specify business requirements and help translate these requirements into technical specifications (including Class, Sequence and other UML diagrams)
  • Work with QA Analysts to implement testing plans and write the necessary code to automate testing in line with our Test-Driven Development methodology
  • Work with customers and project managers to deliver quality, effective software, in line with our Agile Development process
    Help diagnose the root causes of system issues using their problem-solving skills
  • Help research and evaluate potential technical solutions to business problems
  • Working with Software Developers in Test to automate tests and documentation


Essential skills

  • You have a proven interest in coding through your A Level / college course or online platforms like Code Academy and are seeking a Level 4 Software Developer apprenticeship
  • You can write good quality code with sound syntax
  • You enjoy problem solving and want to develop your skills in analysis and design and you will be able to interpret functional / technical specifications and ask relevant questions about what you don’t understand
  • You can demonstrate an ability to problem solve, use your initiative, take responsibility, be organised and work independently
  • Willing and able to work remotely and feel confident using video chat

It would be beneficial if you have some skills in the following or a genuine desire to become highly skilled in:

  • Java
  • SQL
  • Rest
  • Jenkins

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

As part of the Level 4 Software Developer apprenticeship standard, you’ll be registered as a member with the British Computer Society and be on a fast track to an industry recognised qualification and your dedicated industry coach will support you through a blended approach that will include remote, in person, 1-2-1 and group learning.
