What will the apprentice be doing?

It is the responsibility of the Finance Division to manage the financial resources of the University. The Division is also responsible for maintaining the integrity of the accounting records, establishing best practices and for producing both statutory accounts and management information to assist in decision-making at all levels of the institution.

The role holder is a member of the Central and Research Accounting Section (8 staff including the role holder), which is part of the Finance Division and carries out a variety of accounting and financial management tasks, whilst ensuring that best-practice processes and procedures are adhered to in order to support the production of the University’s published statutory Financial Statements and management accounts.

The Central and Research Accounting Section has overall responsibility for the accounting operation of the University’s General Ledger (GL) and central processing of UFS GL transactions, for the operation of the University’s Fixed Assets, Inventory and Grant accounting modules. The section also has the accounting responsibility for a couple of 100% owned University subsidiaries.

The role ensures the section works effectively in;

  • Processing UFS transactions through interactions with the Central Accounting and Research Helpdesks (General Ledger, Fixed Assets, Inventory and Grants).
  • Supporting transactions through the sections subsidiaries.
  • The role will also aid the preparation of University Statutory returns alongside colleagues in the section.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

The applicant will train under First Intuition Cambridge for their level 7 Professional Accountant qualification. They will be expected to attend regular in-centre tuition courses throughout a 36-month period which will help develop their knowledge, skills and behaviours in accountancy-related practices.

First Intuition Cambridge Ltd has Cambridge, Norwich, Ipswich, and Peterborough centres.

Level 2 Functional Skills in maths and English (if required)

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

The Finance Division of the University of Cambridge have a wide scope of work and there is plenty of opportunities for growth and development.  Within Central and Research Accounting where the individual will be placed, the team have responsibility for the University trial balance within provides an experience of many aspects of finance.
