What will the apprentice be doing?

  • To assist for the planning, development and delivery of themes within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), ensuring all learning interests and individual needs of the children are met, extending them where necessary
  • To assist for organising the environment inside and outside to ensure resources and equipment are available and appropriate to meet the needs of the individual children within the group, whilst making sure the resources and equipment are set out in a purposeful, stimulating and safe way, rich in learning opportunities
  • To clear away activities, toys and equipment once finished with, encouraging children to help, making sure all is put away correctly
  • To be a positive role model to other staff and children in respecting the Nursery’s environment and resources
  • To meet the physical needs of the children, encouraging good standards of personal hygiene, whilst helping children develop independence and self-help skills in toileting, dressing and feeding
  • To assist and evaluate children’s learning through a range of assessment, observation and monitoring strategies, ensuring progress records are maintained
  • To ensure good standards of safety, hygiene and cleanliness are maintained at all times
  • To assist with meal and snack times and to ensure children's dietary requirements are catered for
  • To assist in the promotion of parental involvement ensuring you develop and maintain strong partnerships and communication channels with parents/carers to facilitate day-to-day caring and early learning needs and to provide constructive feedback on children’s progress/achievement
  • To work alongside the Nursery Managers and Room Leaders to ensure the Nursery’s philosophies are fulfilled
  • To advise the Nursery Managers and Room Leaders of any concerns in relation to the children, parents, and the safety of the environment
  • To develop your role with the team
  • To support all staff and engage in cohesive, positive working practices
  • To ensure confidentiality is upheld at all times in relation to information regarding the children, their families, and other staff members
  • To be familiar with and adhere to the Nursery’s policies and procedures at all times

  • To be flexible within working practices of the Nursery, sharing in any other duties and responsibilities such as cleaning equipment,

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Apprenticeship Programme: Early Years Practitioners
Level: 2
Duration: 12 months
Course Type: Apprenticeship Standard
Apprenticeship Delivery: Work based qualification. A tutor will visit you every 4-6 weeks in your workplace.

What will be achieved?

  • Level 2 Diploma for Early Years Practitioners
  • Level 2 Early Years Practitioner Standard
  • Level 2 Functional Skills in maths and English (if no prior exemption)

What will be involved at level 2?

  • The Early Years Practitioner Level 2 Apprenticeship is made up of several components which develop the practitioner’s knowledge,
    skills and behaviour. The programme is spread across 12 months and covers 11 units across 2 themes

Following enrolment and induction, programme units are grouped into 2 themes which complement each other.

These are:

  • Health, Safety & Wellbeing
  • Children’s Learning & Development

As part of government policy to raise the quality of an apprentice’s learning, a ‘20% off the job learning’ policy applies to
apprenticeships. Off-the-job training can include training that is delivered at the apprentice’s normal place of work but must not be
delivered as part of their normal working duties.

Functional Skills:

Apprentices also work towards a Level 1 or 2 qualification in English and maths in the first half of the programme if they have no prior
exemption (GCSE’s A-C/8-4 or equivalents in English and maths).

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

Progression to Early Years Educator level 3 programme.
