What will the apprentice be doing?

Our Business Recovery and Insolvency Department in Birmingham have a unique opportunity for an apprentice to join the award-winning team as an Apprentice Insolvency Administrator. Our specialist team work alongside clients in a variety of sectors throughout the region.
You will assist and support the existing team with a wide and varied caseload of primarily corporate insolvency assignments. In addition, the successful candidate may work with the team in providing support to new and existing clients in reviewing their financial position and formulating strategies, where required, in distressed situations.
This position is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious candidate to join a flourishing team, with our office centrally located in the commercial heart of Birmingham.

The impact you will have:

Initial responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Assistance in drafting letters and reports to external stakeholders such as debtors, creditors and financial institutions.
  • Assisting in identifying prospective clients and preparing documentation to comply with Money Laundering rules and regulations.
  • Preparing documentation to facilitate payment of goods and services provided.
  • Depositing client funds.
  • Drafting invoices and associated documents in readiness for payment.
  • Inputting data into specialist software to record case specific information such as creditor claims.
  • Attending client premises to retrieve books and records;
  • and General administrative duties comprising photocopying, filing, processing incoming and outgoing post, preparing refreshments for visitors / staff and dealing with telephone calls.

As part of being an apprentice, the candidate be required to undertake exams (AAT) to further develop their understanding and to progress their career opportunities within the department and or the firm.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Advanced Diploma - AAT Level 3

Advanced builds on the knowledge gained in the Foundation level. If you work in accounts or have studied accountancy before, you may be able to start at this level. You’ll learn complex accounting techniques, and master a number of accounting disciplines including financial processes, advanced bookkeeping, final accounts and ethical practices for accountants. This level will encourage you to master more complex accounting principles in both Bookkeeping and Management Accounting. You’ll develop the technical skills to start, or progress, your career in accountancy and this will allow you to continue with your studies onto Level 4.

To pass this level you’ll need to study five units (also known as subjects), which are all mandatory. Four of the units are examined individually and there is also a synoptic assessment that you’ll take towards the end of the level, which incorporates the final two units as well as drawing on all of the other units you’ve studied at this level.

The area you will cover include:

  • Advanced Bookkeeping.
  • Final Accounts Preparation.
  • Management Accounting: Costing.
  • Indirect Tax.
  • Advanced Synoptic Assessment.

The Apprenticeship standard details the essential Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours that somebody would need to demonstrate to be a successful Assistant Accountant, this includes, Business Awareness, Ethics, Communication, Embracing Change and Problem Solving. Apprentices will need to show they are competent in all the areas detailed in the standard when they take End Point Assessment.

The Knowledge areas of the standard will typically be covered through completion of the AAT qualification. Skills and Behaviours are developed through workshops, e-learning, workplace training and practical experience provided ‘on-the-job’.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?


The candidate will undertake study in AAT Level 3 (Associate of Accounting Technicians) to to master complex accounting disciplines including financial processes, advanced bookkeeping, final accounts and ethics.
Once completed, you will be awarded the AAT Advanced Diploma in Accounting. Career development with PKF Smith Cooper. Further studies with PKF Smith Cooper if the candidate desires e.g. higher AAT levels (Level 4 Professional Diploma in Accounting)
