In accordance with CQC regulations clients should be provided choice and given where possible the opportunity and means to retain their independence. Therefore, the work requires you to be respectful and courteous of others, capable of working with others and thus good communication skills are vital.

It is important to maintain a friendly, welcoming, cheerful and helpful disposition when engaging with clients so as to ensure an atmosphere that puts people at ease.

Qualifications required

  • GCSE (or equivalent) grade A-E in Maths and English.
  • A full driving licence would be preferable but not essential.

Future prospects

Potential to pursue a career in care work and to gain additional QCF Qualifications. Career prospects in care work include community support worker, senior community support worker, supervisor and then to senior management jobs which would be part office based. Additional avenues of interest include social work, physiotherapy and nursing. All would require additional qualifications of Higher Education.

Things to consider

The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year. Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year. The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over. Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Training provider

Mainly delivered and assessed in the workplace working towards a Diploma in Health & Social Care (Level 2).

There are also off the job workshops to achieve other components of the course and in some circumstances, there may be additional Functional Skills workshops to achieve the required levels of Maths and English at Farnborough College of Technology.
