Duties will Include:

  • Manual handling at a variety of levels
  • Putting books into various sized boxes/ totes using a voice system
  • Putting small book orders through a cardboard (singles machine) to be packaged
  • Using the tape gun to seal boxes
  • Picking books from shelves at all levels
  • Replenishing machines with cardboard/ plastic as required
  • Taking stock off pallets from ground level
  • Putting stock onto pallets at ground level
  • Taking stock off machines and putting onto conveyor/ designated carrier area
  • Filling boxes (void filling) once books are in them
  • Filing paperwork and sorting into shelves/ boxes at all levels
  • Cleaning the warehouse as and when required including the dusting of book shelves
  • Using a computer to check orders for processing
  • Storing plastic tote boxes in the warehouse
  • Using the strapping machines to seal cartons/ boxes
  • Replenishing cardboard and plastic as well as the glue tanks
  • Complete duties in line with daily/monthly targets, organisational objectives and KPIs
  • Working as part of the Operations team and communicating effectively with line managers and fellow workers
  • Ensure the total quality of the operational functions
  • Proactively share knowledge and experience with fellow workers to enable tasks to be carried out to the required standards
  • Involved in Six Sigma initiatives and Operations projects (BITE)
  • Ensure the highest standards of housekeeping are maintained
  • Effectively undertake and complete specific tasks as requested ensuring accuracy and efficiency
  • Ensure punctuality, full attendance and suitable appearance at all times
  • Ensure Quality, Health and Safety and Environmental standards and all related company policies are adhered to, raising any issues to the relevant parties as appropriate
  • Take reasonable care for your own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by what you do or what you fail to do

Qualifications required

None required.

Future prospects

Permanent Warehouse Operative contract at end of apprenticeship with the prospect of progressing to Senior Warehouse Operative once more experience and training is gained. The company is expanding which may lead to other opportunities.

Things to consider

Use of machinery and Fork Lift Trucks may be required in time and is age dependent. You will be working in a warehouse environment where you will be active all day. Some lifting will also be required. From 1st October 2016 The National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £3.40 per hour. From April 2017 this rises to £3.50 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training.
