    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Must have a keen interest in working with and the welfare of livestock.
  • Someone who is very observant when checking the animals, willing to learn and willing to work under instruction from the senior member of staff.

Personal qualities

  • Keen to learn, common sense, must enjoy being outside, experience with driving a tractor is desirable but not essential as full training will be given.

Qualifications required

  • Entry onto the apprenticeship is subject to thorough initial assessment to clarify course suitability.
  • Entrants must have the ability to achieve Level 1 Functional Skills in English and Mathematics and be able to manage the requirements of a Level 2 vocational qualifications.

Future prospects

Potential for full time employment at the end of the Apprenticeship as the business develops.

Things to consider

The role will all be outdoors whatever the weather. Consideration should be given to the fact the role is physically demanding.

Training provider

  • Qualification: Level 2 Agriculture (Livestock)
  • College Attendance: Day release to college during term time at the Easton Campus of Easton & Otley College.
  • Training for all job specific tasks will be given. In addition the apprentice will have the support and guidance of a qualified assessor from the college, who will make on-site visits every 6-8 weeks. There may be occasional need to attend the college for short training courses and tests.
