    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

As an intermediate hairdressing apprentice, you will be a valued member of the team and tasks will involve duties including; reception duties such as:

  • answering the phone
  • booking appointments and advising on services
  • general cleaning and upkeep of the salon
  • making drinks
  • shampooing
  • assisting the salon's stylists

When you have built up some basic knowledge and skills you will also be able to carry out hairdressing services such as blow dries, styling and colour application.

Apprentices are expected to have good time keeping skills, good communication skills and be able to work using their own initiative.

Personal qualities

Apprentices are required to have a positive, flexible attitude and be enthusiastic.  This role involves working with the public so we expect you to be polite and courteous at all times and promote a positive image of yourself and the company.

Qualifications required

  • GCSE Grade A-D in Maths (or equivalent)
  • GCSE Grade A-D in English (or equivalent)

The potential to progress onto further industry related qualifications for the right candidate.

Things to consider

Working in Hairdressing can sometimes be physically challenging with long periods of time spent working on your feet. Due to the nature of the business there may be a requirement to work a Saturday. You will also need appropriate trade equipment (e.g. Scissors etc). Kits can be purchased from the college staff. As an apprentice of the college you will be entitled to apply for a NUS card and have access to all our facilities including Gym membership and Library. From 1st October 2016 The National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £3.40 per hour. From April 2017 this rises to £3.50 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training.
