As an Apprentice Accountant you will work as part of a team assisting with clients’ accounting needs.
This position involves a number of different aspects including:
- Preparing financial statements for limited companies, partnerships and sole traders
- Preparing tax computations
- Providing bookkeeping services
- Preparation of VAT returns
- Filing Companies House and H M Revenue & Customs documents on client's behalf
Assignments will be undertaken both in the office and at client's premises. Apprentices will have support and on the job training from managers and other senior staff.
During your training you will be expected to develop an understanding of the practical issues involved in delivering a high-quality service to clients.
Both practical and theoretical training will be undertaken, with an aim to becoming a member of The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW).
Requirements and prospects
Desired skills
- You will need to have strong numeracy, literacy skills and IT skills
- It is expected that you will have practical experience working within an accountancy practice and have already completed AAT level 4
Personal qualities
You will need to have an analytical and methodical approach to your work and be able to apply both common sense and technical skills to different assignments
A general interest in business will be expected, as will be a willingness to learn.
Desired qualifications
- Minimum of 5 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C/9-5 (or equivalent)
- 2 A levels at grade C (or equivalent)
- A relevant accounting qualification up to and including Level 4 (or equivalent)
Future prospects
It is expected that you will stay with the company following successful completion of your apprenticeship to undertake further qualifications and increase your responsibility in the office.

David Pooley:
David qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1985 having trained with Peat Marwick and Mitchell and moving into a commercial role as mine accountant for RTZ at South Crofty Tin Mine, where he was responsible for installing new management controls in addition to all cost controls for capital projects undertaken.
From 1988 to 2001 David was in practice with a firm based throughout the South West making partner within two years. Latterly as partner in charge of their Truro office he was instrumental in the firm's development from 4 to 20 staff and was often responsible for the training and marketing programs.
To provide his clients with individually tailored accountancy and advisory services David set up Pooleys in 2001. With focus, ambition and dedication he and his team advise on all aspects of accounting and taxation, opportunities for business acquisition and expansion, succession planning and the logistics of harnessing grant funding.

You will undertake the “Accountancy Professional” Apprenticeship (a Degree Apprenticeship in Accounting), with full support from Accountancy Learning as part of their Flexible Apprenticeship Programme.
The apprenticeship includes achievement of the prestigious ACA qualification comprising 15 examinations, completion of ethics training, a minimum of 450 days of relevant work experience plus achievement of 52 professional development skills and behaviours.
The "End Point Assessment" for the apprenticeship includes the Case study exam which is part of the ACA qualification plus a project report where you describe how you have achieved the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for the apprenticeship standard.
You will receive support from both the employer, and the training provider, to complete and achieve your Apprenticeship and will be given time to study on a block-release basis. As you are working towards a professional qualification, it is also expected that you will continue your studies outside of normal office hours.
