Our busy, family owned bakery requires an apprentice production chef to join our small, friendly kitchen team. As part of this team the successful applicant will be shown how we produce our pasties from scratch on a daily basis to sell in our shop. This process involves the use of machinery to prepare our vegetable pasty mix, following step by step instructions, crimping of the pasties, using our deck ovens to bake them off, then carrying trays from our kitchen down to the shop for customers to buy. This is a physically demanding role which involves carry hot and heavy trays down stairs.

As well as pasty production our apprentice will also be taught how we produce our own short crust pastry. This involves lifting heavy ingredients, following and following a set recipe. The pastry shift will require the apprentice to produce pastry discs of various sizes ready to use for pasty production the following day. These shifts will eventually be carried out alone once the kitchen shift is complete. These shifts require the staff member to stay for an additional 4-5 hours. At the end of these shifts the apprentice would be responsible for locking up the bakery.

We produce many cakes on site. These include bread pudding, flapjack, lemon cake, brownies, muffins, blondies, caramel shortbread and our award winning apple cake to name a few. Our apprentice would be expected to follow recipes in order to produce our cake range and achieve excellent levels of consistency.

This role requires an individual who is motivated, hard working, punctual, trustworthy, flexible and able to carry out physical work.

Full, in house training will be provided by members of our kitchen team in order to achieve these goals.

  • Open bakery kitchen
  • Prepare ingredients for pasty production
  • Make and bake pasties and other savoury goods for bakery shop, adhering to strict time scales
  • Adhere to food hygiene regulations at all times
  • Clean down kitchen at end of shift
  • Learn pastry production
  • Produce cakes/bakes ready for bakery shop

About the employer

St Stephens Bakery is a family run business on the Ridgeway in the heart of Plympton, Plymouth. Established in 2006 by Susan & Kelvin Lock (AKA Mum & Dad), we were delighted to carry the bakery forward and took ownership in August 2017. We hand make pasties, cakes and other savoury products in our upstairs kitchen every day. Using local suppliers for all our ingredients and adding no preservatives what so ever – straight from the oven and down to the shop for sale! We have a small eat in area serving hot drinks and our full range of products.
