Responsibilities will include:

Care and wellbeing:

  • To assist with the care of residents as directed by the team leader and senior care assistants
  • To assist in all required personal care tasks as dictated in the individuals care plan (such as hygiene, dressing / undressing, assist residents in and out of bed, toileting, bathing and commode emptying
  • Give emotional support to residents’ family and friends when necessary
  • Supporting residents living with dementia and promptly reporting signs of deteriorating health
  • Demonstrate compassion, patience and care always
  • Provide a key worker role to named residents, including settling new residents into the home, helping with general enquiries and making regular contact
  • Escort residents as required, including hospital appointments and social activities
  • Encouraging residents’ social and therapeutic activities that suit their interests and hobbies
  • Conducting all the above as a member of a team, supporting colleagues as required

Monitoring and record keeping:

  • Complete care charts and all other documentation using the CMS system in a timely manner
  • Report any changes in residents’ condition or general welfare
  • Ensuring information is received, read and acted upon regarding events of the previous shift to ensure consistency of care provision and follow where necessary

Assisting with food and nutrition:

  • To ensure residents meals are nutritious and appetising, served correctly and with care, maintaining a high standard of meal service and presentation
  • To help residents select their meals
  • To assist residents who require help with eating and drinking
  • To serve drinks when required     

Domestic care home assistance:

  • Change bed linen and make beds
  • To ensure residents laundry (clothing/bedding etc.) is collected throughout the day and laundered before being ironed and put away in residents’ rooms
  • To launder all cleaning cloths, mop heads, kitchen towels throughout the day as required
  • Report any concerns with laundry equipment to management as soon as possible
  • Ensure that clinical waste is discarded correctly
  • Ensure high standards of tidiness, hygiene and cleanliness in residents’ rooms, bathrooms, toilets and kitchen and in all other parts of the premises
  • To be responsible for the general care of wheelchairs and walking aids and reporting irregularities

  • Staff may be asked to undertake other reasonable duties assigned by senior carers, Team Leader or home managers, including working at other sites

Personal qualities

  • Ability to attend to ALL personal care needs 
  • Good practice in relation to first aid and manual handling
  • Good food hygiene practices

The role requires a people centred approach from an individual who is equally able to attend to individual’s personal care and to spot and resolve problems, managing changing and sometimes challenging behaviour and come up with creative ideas and activities tailored to residents’ needs and interests.

Interviews for this Apprenticeship with Lancaster and Morecambe College will take place on:

  • Thursdays at 9.30am, 10.00am and 10.30am.
