    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

The successful candidates will learn many aspects of flooring whilst with the employer such as sub floor preparation, carpet fitting, laying luxury vinyl tiles, fitting safety flooring and vinyl. You will also be taught floor designing and restoration of flooring as well as how to rectifying jobs. The work carried out will mainly be on domestic residential properties so you will need to conduct yourself appropriately whilst representing the company, although there may be some commercial work as well.

You will be shown how to use a range of specialist tools and equipment for this role, safely and correctly, under the guidance of a fully qualified member of their team. Part of the role will be to lift heavy products and tools, so the candidate will need to be reasonably fit and have plenty of stamina for this position.

The successful candidate will be required to follow health and safety procedures in the workplace at all times, and you must wear the relevant personal protective equipment for this role. You must make sure that all tools and equipment used throughout the day are cleaned and put away correctly.

As some of their work is in the north of the country, you will be required to work away roughly every other week. This will consist of travelling up with the team on a Monday, working Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday morning, and travelling back on the Friday afternoon. Whilst working away your accommodation will be paid for and food costs helped towards. As the kind of work carried out by this company is somewhat bespoke and delivered to a range of companies, some night work may be required. The hours for this are usually 11pm-2am, and the next day you will have a day off work.

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

The ideal candidates will need to be physically fit and have plenty of stamina to be able to carry heavy materials and tools to and from the van. You must be flexible with the working hours as some jobs may require later finishing times to complete the work for the client within the required deadlines.

You will need to have good communication and hand-eye coordination skills for this role, and show attention to detail, as this will be required when cutting and trimming products.

Good timekeeping and attendance are also important for this position.

Personal qualities

You will need to be focused and show the enthusiasm and determination to succeed in your chosen career. You must have the willingness and drive to undertake new skills within this role.

The successful candidate will need to be able to work well within an experienced team, and be confident to talk to clients when required. A friendly, professional approach is required when representing the company.

Qualifications required

Grades A*-E in Maths and English or equivalent would be beneficial, but practical ability and a willingness to learn new skills in a new trade will help your application.

Future prospects

On completion of your level 2 qualification in flooring, you will have gained the necessary skills and knowledge to have a successful career, with the view to gaining full time employment with the company. The employer is very keen and committed to invest in another apprentice to help them progress through their apprenticeship, to become fully qualified at the end of their training.

  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Floorcovering Occupations
  • Level 2 Diploma in Floorcovering – Textile and Impervious
  • Functional Skills in Maths and English (Level 1)
  • Construction Skills Health, Safety and Environment test – CSCS Test
  • Emergency First Aid
  • Certified Health and Safety Course
  • Internet Safety / Safeguarding

Attendance is required at our our Skills Group training centre on 1 week block release sessions, every 8 weeks as part of your training course. When you are with us you learn sub-floor preparation, carpet fitting, floor tiling, impervious and vinyl to help develop your hand skills and these sessions are set out over six visits.

We provide your accommodation, food and collection to and from the training centre whilst with us for these weeks. You have the opportunity to carry out tasks using our indispensable high quality materials ensuring when you return to your employer the following week you have improved your hand skills as well as having a greater knowledge of each area of floorlaying.

You will be supported throughout your training by one of our dedicated assessors. As an additional qualification, you will also achieve Emergency First Aid and Certified Health and Safety Certificates, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.
