To work as part of a small team in a lively kitchen providing 3 healthy, home cooked meals a day. You will learn all aspects of the job within a busy, sociable, kitchen environment.

Bowles runs two kitchens. Our primary kitchen caters mainly for schools and youth groups and for larger groups of adults, this is normally a family service. In our second kitchen, we cater to a hotel standard mainly for businesses where we provide full English breakfast and 3-course meals offering choices and providing waiter service.

The job will include:

  • Vegetable preparation
  • Baking cakes and biscuits
  • Making pastry and sauces
  • Following recipes for all our home-cooked meals
  • Food costs and how to budget
  • Following good food hygiene practice
  • Customer service
  • Learning to clean as you go

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

Basic knife skills.

Some knowledge of food hygiene and some experience within the catering environment.

Qualifications required

Good general education.

English and Maths GCSE, or equivalent, grade C or above is desirable but not essential.

Future prospects

Full time permanent position (37.5 hours per week).

Things to consider

You will need your own transport to get to Bowles Outdoor Centre as it is a very rural location. From 1st October 2016 The National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £3.40 per hour. From April 2017 this rises to £3.50 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training.
