Wages explained
The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Previous experience of gardening work would be useful but not essential.
  • Willing to learn new skills.
  • Experience of using machines and power tools would be useful but not essential as any training will be given.

  • Responsible and trustworthy.
  • Able to work as part of a team or sometimes alone.
  • Good “people skills”.
  • Able to carry out demands of the role.
  • Willing to learn.

Qualifications required

  • A-G in GCSE English and Maths or equivalent.

To gain recognised qualifications and get good experience.

Things to consider

This is hard work in all weathers, so you must be prepared to attend every day and have appropriate warm clothing. Please make sure you are able to travel easily to the employer. Please be aware that you will be expected to work some weekends.
