    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

A Mechanical Apprenticeship involves the installation and maintenance of a wide range of Engineering Plant Equipment; it may also involve the manufacture of new components using machinery.

Mechanical Craftspeople are highly skilled and can work in a wide variety of industries and sectors with complex plant & equipment. They work with highly complex plant and equipment. They are involved in the manufacture of component parts for machines, the assembly and installation of machinery, as well as the maintenance of equipment.

They must work with precision and accuracy, and have a logical and thorough approach to work. They also need to be able to read and interpret drawings and diagrams, diagnose and fault-find problems with machinery and equipment, as well as work co-operatively with other colleagues to ensure that work is carried out to a high level of quality.
