Principal Accountabilities:

Apprentices are expected to learn all aspects of their chosen craft and apply the knowledge, skills and techniques gained through the Apprenticeship Programme competently, safely and in accordance with National standards.

Apprentices are expected to complete the Certificate in Electrical Power Engineering and a QCF Diploma in Electrical Power Engineering whilst on the Apprenticeship Programmes

  • Fitters – Construction fitter duties, such as electrical fitting activities on High Voltage switch gear, transformers and associated equipment.
  • Installation of Control and protection equipment.
  • Installation of Earthing Systems
  • Installation of disconnectors and open Bus Bar
  • Maintenance of High Voltage equipment
  • Fault Finding on Low and High Voltage equipment
  • Receiving High Voltage documents
  • Working as part of a team and where necessary under own initiative

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

Applicants must possess a high degree of manual dexterity demonstrated through the use of hand tools and will be expected to undertake a range of practical assessment.

Personal qualities

Candidates will need to show the ability to work in a team.

No previous work experience required.

Qualifications required

Suitable applicants will be new to the power transmission and distribution industry and have recently achieved GCSE's Grades A to C in English, Maths and Science/Technology or equivalent.

Applicants will need to demonstrate an interest in electronics, electricity or engineering and enthusiasm to work outdoors.

Applicants must be prepared to work throughout England & Wales and the ability to stay away from home if required. Apprentices will spend up to 36 weeks at Utility Construction Training (UCT) Carrington, Manchester. For this opportunity applicants must be 18+ years of age and have a full driving licence and transport to get to work. Please do not apply, if you have not passed your test and do not have your own transport. Travel expenses will be paid. There will be an assessment centre for this opportunity which will take place at the Kettering Park Hotel on the 18th & 19th April. Applicants must be able to attend on this date to be considered for the programme. The training provider for the period of the apprenticeship is Utility & Construction Training Ltd (UCT) based in Carrington, Manchester. Recruiting from these areas: Bedford, Cambridge, Aylesbury Colchester, and Norwich. Head office is Stevenage. Please note the area addresses are used for recruitment purposes, as our works are usually in large substations, over a number of weeks, spread right across the UK Power Network (client) region. We picked those towns, as the majority of our work would be centred around them at some point. Travelling to sites would be essential, which might mean being in one area for six weeks, and then another for six etc.

About the employer

Our partnership contract with Anglian Water works in the areas of reactive planned and small capital projects for Building Services, M&E and Civil activities. We work across all activities within the Water supply and Water Recycling industry giving an apprentice excellent breadth of experience and exposure to functional as well as up to date engineering technology. You will be working as part of a team of Civil Engineering professionals. Our teams work in partnership to deliver site repairs, installations and refurbishments in both disciplines. The apprentice will become an integral part of the team and learn to undertake work in a safe, prompt and efficient manner.

Training provider

Trainees will spend up to 36 weeks at Utility & Construction Training Ltd (UCT) Carrington, Manchester acquiring the basic knowledge, skills and competence to enable them to work productively on the High Voltage Network before commencing work in the areas.

Apprentices are expected to complete the Certificate in Electrical Power Engineering and a QCF Diploma in Electrical Power Engineering whilst on the Apprenticeship Programme.
