    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Dealing with telephone requests and enquires
  • Assisting with clinic preparation
  • Where specialities are not paper light, request and return notes to the Medical Records Department.
  • Entering and retrieving data from hospital computer systems
  • Booking Simple appointments
  • Filing/Photocopying/Faxing
  • Opening, sorting and distribution of post
  • General errands to other Departments within the hospital.
  • Keep an organised and tidy office environment.
  • Once Training progresses the apprentice will be asked to:-
  • Communicate verbally with staff/relatives/other professionals
  • Book more complex patient appointments
  • Work on the reception desk within the centre.
  • Clinic preparation processes in their entirety (overseen by supervisor)

Responsibility for Patient/Client Care, Treatment & Therapy

  • The post holder may be required to deal with anxious and distressed patients and relatives by directing them to trained members of staff on occasion.

Responsibility for Finance, Equipment & Other Resources

  • Shared responsibility for using resources in an efficient way and equipment safely, and for the safe handling and storage of patient property and patient notes

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Basic keyboard skills
  • Willing to use or learn to use a computer
  • Basic knowledge of NHS legislation to include COSHH/Health and Safety/Infection Control/Waste Management/Manual handling/Confidentiality and Data Protection Act.
  • Experience of working with the general public in retail or public services
  • Previous, past or recent experience of receptionist work.
  • Able to use Word, Excel and Outlook

Personal qualities

  • Able to work as part of a team
  • Ability to work on own initiative within agreed policies and procedures
  • Confident and able to relate to patients and staff in a calm professional manner
  • Physically able to carry out the duties of the post including bending, stretching, kneeling and walking for long periods of the shift

Qualifications required

  • Willingness to work towards NVQ in Business Admin
  • Qualifications in English and Maths Grade C or above.

About the employer

Musgrove Park Hospital has 16 operating theatres which are divided into 5 departments including General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Head and Neck Surgery and a self-contained Day Surgery Unit providing a broad range of surgical specialities. Within each of the departments there are a variety of roles requiring varying skill levels with an opportunity for staff to progressively develop their skills over time.
