    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

In the first year of your apprenticeship your 'on the job' training in the salon will consist of assisting the qualified stylists on a daily basis to learn all aspects of the job and gain commercial experience. This includes welcoming clients, making refreshments, shampooing and conditioning, assisting stylists, answering calls and ensuring the salon is clean and tidy at all times.

As you become competent some of the duties below will become part of your daily duties in your salon.

Practical and theory training will be carried out at our training salon once a week where you will gain hands on experience in:

  • Client consultation
  • Shampoo and condition hair and scalp
  • Colouring
  • Style and finish hair
  • Set and dress hair
  • Cutting
  • Perming
  • Plait and twist hair
  • Reception duties

Qualifications required

Must have a minimum of Level 1 / GCSE Grade D or Grade 3 (as per the new grading system) in Maths and English. Science would be useful but not essential as full training is provided.
 

Future prospects

Suitable candidates will have the opportunity to progress onto the Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship to become a fully qualified stylist after 2 years.

Things to consider

This job will entail standing for long periods of time and will require patience and commitment to gain a career in hairdressing. Training provider

The ‘Hair Professional’ qualification Apprenticeship Standard is comprised of the following elements:

Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing
Integrated qualification combining competence and technical knowledge elements.
Functional Skills
Maths and English Level 2
(PLTS) Personal Learning and Thinking Skills

Day release will be required once a week at our training salon (‘Salon Apprentice’, Jameson Street, Hull).

Upon completion of all the programme assessment requirements you will be put forward for the end-point assessment. The End-point assessment will be carried out by City & Guilds and will include the following:

Practical Observation: The learner will demonstrate they can complete a range of services on at least two models to industry standards and within commercial timings.

Oral Questioning: The learner’s consultation skills, communication skills, safe working practices, professionalism, values and behaviours will also be assessed by oral questioning.

Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage (ANMW): The National Minimum Wage for Apprentices is £3.50 per hour from 1st April 2017. This is the legal minimum pay per hour applying to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their apprenticeship. For apprentices 19 or over who have completed their first year and are continuing their apprenticeship, the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The wage for Apprentices applies to both time spent on the job plus time spent training.
