Stakehill Pallet & Dunnage Systems of Wigan is searching for an enthusiastic apprentice fabricator/welder.

The individual will be trained in all aspects of the business, including health and safety, factory process’s etc. and will attend college to learn the specific trade requirements.

The role will be varied and challenging - core details of the position are:

  • Setting out the materials to be cut or joined
  • Following engineering instructions and drawings
  • Inspecting and testing cuts and joins, using precision measuring instruments
  • The Fabricator / Welder Apprentice will become part of a small team of fabricator/welders making bespoke steelwork projects
  • The Fabricator / Welder apprentice will learn aspects of MIG and other welding/manufacturing processes and work with both mild steel and other types of steel products
  • Applicants should show an interest in engineering and a good attitude towards work colleagues & customers and attention for detail

The ideal candidate will be self-confident but willing to start at the beginning and become a reliable member of the team.

For the right candidate, future prospects could include CAD design, additional training courses and supervisory positions.


Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Good understanding of English & Maths and be able to understand a drawing with measurements detailed
  • Candidates will already have shown an interest in a craft trade during their school/college/spare time to date
  • Preferably but not essential, hold a formal qualification and/or relevant engineering workshop experience and/or be able to provide training certificates for training on equipment (where previous experience is offered)

Qualifications required

Educated to a good standard in Mathematics and English, also some form of practical course work.

Things to consider

Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage (ANMW): The National Minimum Wage for Apprentices is £3.50 per hour from 1st April 2017. This is the legal minimum pay per hour applying to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their apprenticeship. For apprentices 19 or over who have completed their first year and are continuing their apprenticeship, the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The wage for Apprentices applies to both time spent on the job plus time spent training.
