You will contribute to a high quality caring environment for the children in a warm, friendly and stimulating atmosphere in which the children can develop emotionally, socially and educationally through individual attention and group activities.

The main activities, duties and responsibilities of the post are set out below. This job description is intended to give a framework rather than to set limits.

The post holder will be required to:

  • Undertake and successfully complete the training element of the Apprenticeship Programme as scheduled
  • Assist in the day to day work of the Nursery and under supervision, provide high quality childcare for all children attending the nursery in order to meet their personal and emotional needs
  • Contribute to ideas regarding implementation of policies and procedures such as Early Years Foundation Stage
  • Be aware of and work within all nursery policies and procedures, and implement them when necessary
  • Be aware of the need for confidentiality
  • Participate in staff team meetings
  • Ensure that all nursery equipment is in a safe and hygienic condition
  • Perform any other duties of a similar nature as may be allocated from time to time by the Nursery Manager
  • As a list of general duties, the above is not exhaustive.
  • The work of the College as a whole is expected to develop and the holder of the post will be required to work flexibly with colleagues to facilitate this development.

Qualifications required

Level 2 NVQ in Childcare and Early Years Education ICT Level 2 or willing to work towards.

Ideally GCSE English and Maths at grade A-C/9-4. However, the College would consider applicants with 1 grade C/4 and 1 D/3 in these areas with the expectation that the successful candidate would gain an A-C on completion of their course.

Future prospects

Apprentices may apply for Nursery Practitioner posts at the Nursery at the end of their apprenticeship, if there are vacancies, and will be considered alongside all other candidates.

The National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £3.30 per hour from the 1st October 2015. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged over 19 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training
