    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Excellent Veterinary Care Assistant Apprenticeship based in the WN7 area of Leigh, suitable candidates will have a passion for animal care and also be interested in gaining some experience in administration. The successful candidate will be undertaking the Veterinary Care Assistant qualification.

Duties include: -

  • Start of day speak to inpatient nurse to see if there are any animals that they would like you to nurse, hand feed, walk
  • Cleaning - This is probably the most common task undertaken by a Veterinary Care Assistant and one to which you will no doubt become very quickly accustomed! Each practice will have their own protocols related to how kennels are cleaned and set but this will be explained in detail
  • Damp dust theatre surfaces. Set up theatre tables and prep tables
  • When on reception you are often the first staff member a client will come into contact with, so professional behaviour and dress is essential at all times. You will get involved in answering calls, transferring messages and helping out with administration were required.
  • Make up damp cotton wool swabs with hibiscrub.
  • Get out some kits and suture material needed (check with nurse or vet)
  • Check the washing machine is on and continues working over the day.
  • File consent forms from previous day/over weekend. Also shred blank documents with patient details, please take these to the office upstairs and shred them.
  • Check all fridge temperatures and record in temperature booklet.
  • During the morning wipe down theatre/ X-ray room and Prep surfaces in between ops if the nurse is caring for her patient.
  • Clean and re-sterilise instruments during the morning.
  • Run any blood tests or package any external lab samples if required.
  • Prepare new drape/ swab packs and restock supplies for theatre and prep.

This is a 15-month apprenticeship and will suit a candidate that is looking to develop a career in this field. You will be passionate about animals and keen to learn. Please check that you are able to get to the apprenticeship via public transport or with your own transport as the company is looking for someone who wants to be with them long term.
