    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

An Apprentice required to work in a busy salon environment whilst receiving full training in all aspects of hairdressing such as:

  • Consulting with clients
  • Cutting
  • Colouring and styling hair

Duties to include;

  • Working with a range of clients
  • Carrying out receptionist work and ensuring the salon is kept clean and tidy at all times
  • On completion of the apprenticeship the successful candidate will receive the Hair Prefessional Standard in Hairdressing

  • Some work experience would be advantageous but not essential.

Personal qualities

  • The successful candidate must be extremely well presented.
  • They must be able to work on their own initiative and be self motivated.
  • They should be a team player and be able to follow instruction.
  • They should have a keen interest in the beauty industry and be willing to work hard.
  • Punctuality and reliability is essential.

Qualifications required

  • None required. Full training given.

Future prospects

To progress onto your NVQ Level 3 in Hairdressing whilst working on the shop floor building your own clientele.

Things to consider

You will be expected to work Saturdays and one late night a week. You will be required to make beverages for clients. You will be required to help maintain salon cleanliness.
