    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

The administration and reception staff play a vital role in the smooth running of the organisation and are required to provide excellent customer service to patients on a daily basis. You will be working in a varied role across 4 key areas of the centre for which you will receive full training.

Key Duties/Responsibilities are as follows.


  • Issuing new and repeat prescriptions that are paper based, electronic or online.

Telephone Management:

  • Handling enquiries.
  • Booking and arranging patient appointments.
  • Issuing test results.

Reception Services:

  • Greeting patients on arrival.
  • Signing in visitors.
  • Handling enquiries.

Database Management:

  • Scanning documents.
  • Hospital Records Indexing.
  • Data Inputting.
  • Liaison with other health agencies where required – i.e. hospitals.

Other duties:

  • Photocopying of documents.
  • General filing.
  • Handling and franking mail.
  • Ad hoc projects – e.g. Producing patient statistic reports.

You will also be required to undertake additional courses as part of your workplace training - this includes Safeguarding, Health and Safety.

Qualifications required

Grade C (/4) or above in GCSE English and Maths or equivalent.

Hathaway Medical Centre provides health care for almost 16,000 patients in Chippenham and surrounding areas. There are 10 doctors who work for the surgery supported by a team of nurses, healthcare assistants and phlebotomists.

Hathaway Medical Centre aims to provide a traditional family doctor service in a friendly, efficient way. As well as our full range of surgeries and clinics run at the practice, the clinicians also have responsibility at the local Community Hospital for our patients who are admitted onto the ward. We aim to be as available as possible, offering slots each day for urgent problems that may arise.
Our main surgery building is split into four areas - Red, Blue and Yellow areas are on the ground floor, the Grey area is situated on the first floor.
We also run our branch surgery in our old premises at 32 New Road, for pre-booked appointments only.
