The nursery requires candidates to be Level 2 qualified and applications without this won't be considered.

Apprentice Nursery Nurse will be required to complete the following duties as part of their role:

  • Plan and carry out activites for the children, linking to the EYFS
  • Observe children and update developmental records
  • Hygiene duties, such as nappy changing and toilet duties 
  • Ensuring the routines, policies and procedures of the nursery are followed at all times to create a safe environment for children and staff.
  • Taking responsibilty for a key group of children
  • Feed back to parents and carers daily

Desired skills

The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, and have some experience working in a childcare setting.

A good level of written and spoken English is essential.

Qualifications required

  • Level 2 Childcare qualification is essential 
  • GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths - all grades considered

Future prospects

On completion of the Level 3 Advanced Diploma in Childcare, you may be offered a permanent position at the nursery, with the potential to move in to a more senior role, such as room leader or supervisor.

Initial English, Maths and ICT assessments tests will be carried out, as part of the registration process to make sure we know what level you’re currently working towards, and what tuition you’ll need. The starting wage for this role is the National Minimum Wage for Apprentices, which is £3.50 per hour from April 2017. This is the legal minimum pay per hour applying to students in the first year of any new apprenticeship, regardless of level, although some employers may pay a higher rate. The wage for Apprentices applies to both time spent on the job plus time spent training. A DBS check will be required which we or the nursery will help with. Employer interviews will be carried out before the vacancy closing date and a start date arranged as soon as possible if you are the successful candidate. This role requires you to be standing, working with children for most of your day. You’ll speak to speak to parents and other staff, fill in paperwork on a daily basis and will be required to take children out of the setting when necessary.

Training provider

Apprentice Nursery Nurse will be employed up to 40 hours per weekYour employer will appoint a work based mentor to support you and you will also get a dedicated Training Manager from Smart Training.

You will be required to attend one study day per month in a local centre, which will take place on a Saturday from 10am – 4.00pm.

On completion of this apprenticeship, you will be awarded:

  • Level 3 Diploma for the Children and Young People's Workforce
  • Level 2 Functional Skills qualifications in Mathematics, English and ICT
  • Employee Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) qualification
