We are looking for an apprentice in horticulture to work with our fully qualified and very experienced gardener.

The role involves:

  • Maintaining the grounds and gardens of our care homes and other properties in Bristol
  • Designing, landscaping and planting of new garden features
  • Growing some edible crops (apples, tomatoes, blackcurrent etc.) for use in our kitchens

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • The ability to work outdoors in all weathers.
  • Good timekeeping
  • An enthusiasm for growing edible crops,  beautiful plants and the outdoors

Personal qualities

Polite and well-mannered (our apprentice will spend time with our customers in our gardens).

Qualifications required

GCSE grade C (or equivalent)  in Maths and English preferred, but not essential as training in Maths and English will be provided as part of the apprenticeship.

Future prospects

Following successful completion of the apprenticeship, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to progress to a full time gardener’s position within the company.

Things to consider

Candidates will be expected to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Employers also expect candidates to be reliable, trustworthy with good time keeping. The National Minimum Wage for Apprentices is £3.50 per hour from 1st April 2017. This is the legal minimum pay per hour applying to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their apprenticeship. For apprentices 19 or over who have completed their first year and are continuing their apprenticeship, the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. Training on the Apprenticeships Programme for 16 to 18 year olds is a priority and fully-funded by Government. Training for Apprenticeships for those over this age is part funded, with employers expected to make a part or full contribution.

We have been providing care for the elderly for 28 years and we have three care homes: 1) Abbots Leigh Manor 2) Lampton House 3) Stainsbridge House Our homes offer comprehensive care combined with superior levels of personal service and high quality environments. As well as long stay care, we also offer flexible day care and short stays (respite care) when required.
