The duties and responsibilities involved in this role include:

  • Providing full and practical support in the day to day operations of the nursery
  • Planning, organising and implementing appropriate activities for children which meet their physical, social, emotional, intellectual and development needs
  • Assisting in providing a safe, supportive and caring environment for young children
  • Monitoring, assessing, recording and reporting on the development and progress of children in the setting
  • Keeping children’s files up to date with planning for their individual needs, observations, development records and all other relevant documentation
  • Preparing and serving food, milk, drinks and snacks to children as required
  • Assisting children with personal care, including changing nappies, assisting with potty training, toileting, changing clothes
  • Housekeeping duties including cleaning of the nursery to ensure that hygienic standards are maintained at all times

  • Communication skills are vital in this role. Successful applicants will need to be comfortable communicating with babies and children, their parents and guardians, and colleagues within the nursery.

Qualifications required

  • The successful applicant will be required to have the Intermediate Apprenticeship for the Children and Young People’s Workforce level 2 (CYPW).
  • This is a framework of qualifications which includes the Level 3 Certificate in CYPW and Functional Skills in maths, English and ICT 

Future prospects

Possibility of securing a permanent position within the nursery on completion of Apprenticeship programme.

Things to consider

• Successful applicants must be aged 16 or over in order to be included in nursery ratios, as stated in the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage. • This post is subject to an enhanced Vetting and Barring/CRB Disclosure which will disclose all cautions, reprimands and warnings as well as convictions. • The role will require involvement in out of working hours activities, e.g. training, staff meetings, open days, Christmas parties etc. • All staff members within the setting must present a clean and smart appearance at all times following the nursery’s dress code. • Maintaining confidentiality about all information and issues relating to children and their families is essential. • Successful applicants must develop an awareness of child protection and safeguarding issues. • Applicants who have a degree will not be eligible to undertake a funded Apprenticeship programme. • Working in a nursery will involve working shift patterns including early morning starts and early evening finishes. • The role may include long periods of time standing. • Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage (ANMW): The National Minimum Wage for Apprentices is £3.50 per hour from 1st April 2017. This is the legal minimum pay per hour applying to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their apprenticeship. For apprentices 19 or over who have completed their first year and are continuing their apprenticeship, the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies.
