The role is predominantly within the free-range egg laying business (may have possible opportunities for some work within our arable farming business)
We have had, and retained two apprentices, and as they are developing their skills we are looking to begin another apprentice. It is a job that requires flexibility, ability to work independently and a willingness to listen and learn.
It is working within a team, it can be physically demanding and very varied, as all livestock work can be.
The apprentice would be responsible for daily egg collection, care of the flock and tasks associated with running a large free-range egg business. There may also be opportunity to learn skills and gain experience within our arable business and to complete a range of basic general farm tasks.
It will require weekend working and early starts or later finishes on a rota basis.

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Reliability and a positive attitude to learning, a full commitment in time and attitude. Willingness to undertake manual work.
  • Basic numeracy and literacy.
  • Non smoker preferred.
  • Driving license an advantage.

Personal qualities

  • Reliable, ability to listen and learn.
  • Willingness to follow instructions, complete tasks as instructed and pay attention to detail.

Qualifications required

  • Entry onto the apprenticeship is subject to a thorough initial assessment to establish course suitability.
  • Applicants should have at least 4 GCSEs (or equivalent) including English and Maths at grades A-E or 9- 3.
  • Evidence of qualifications will be required.
  • Apprentices need to be employed for minimum of 30 hours a week in the industry with a contract of employment.

Things to consider

This role requires physical, practical work with poultry. Working with livestock requires flexibility as it is an all year-round role with both indoors and outdoors work.
There is the possibility of accommodation available on site in static caravan – by discussion.

Training provider

  • Qualification: Level 2 livestock /Poultry apprenticeship.
  • College Attendance: Block Weeks.
  • Training for all job specific tasks will be given.
  • In addition the apprentice will have the support and guidance of a qualified assessor from the college, who will make on-site visits every 6-8 weeks.
  • There may be the occasional need to attend either the Otley or Easton campus for short training courses and tests.

Working Week: average of 39 hours but flexible.
Shortlisting/Interviews - Shortlisting and interviews will take place throughout the duration of the vacancy ad. This may mean that the vacancy could close before the published cut-off date should suitable candidates be found.

Shift work = 4 days on, 4 days off with weekend working, Some flexibility can be negotiated but it is working as part of a team.

There is accommodation available on site in static caravan – possible by discussion.
