Within this role you will gain skills and qualifications pivotal to becoming a chef. Working in a fast paced environment you will gain hands on experience in the day to day duties involved in a commis chef position. You will work in a supportive team focused on a positive goal of giving children the best possible start in life.

Duties and topics covered across the role will include:

  • Assist in the preparation and cooking of all meals.
  • Assist in the serving of meals and counter presentation.
  • Assist in the washing and clearing away of all associated equipment, utensils and crockery.
  • To ensure minimum kitchen wastage.
  • Adhere to the rota systems in place for maintenance of cleanliness and hygiene.
  • Assist with stock control, rotation of stock, accept and store deliveries.
  • Occasionally assist with special functions, which may be outside of normal working hours.
  • General cleaning duties.
  • Actively contribute to development initiatives to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the catering department.
  • Report any maintenance issues to the Head Chef immediately.

Desired skills

The post holder will be able to demonstrate strong organisational and team working skills. They will have a good general knowledge of ICT packages and demonstrate a good level of spoken and written literacy.

Personal qualities

• We are looking for an Apprentice Commis Chef to support the Head Chef in cooking and serving our exciting and healthy menu. • You will be responsible for basic food preparation and cooking, maintaining an excellent standard of cleanliness and hygiene, as well as stock control and rotation. • All of your training will be underpinned against the national standard through your apprentice training with Nottingham College • The successful candidate will have a genuine passion to work in the hospitality sector and will want to grow and learn all aspects of cooking and the hospitality industry. • Consequently we are looking for a capable, mature minded and motivated individual who takes a great deal of pride in their work and demonstrates a ‘can do' attitude towards their responsibilities.

Qualifications required

A*-D Maths and English or equivalent at GCSE desirable but not essential

Candidate must be able to travel to the workplace according to working hours and be willing to work public holidays in accordance with the role.

The current National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £3.50 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged over 18 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training. * Please note that anyone under the age of 18 will only work a maximum of 40 hours per week. Any role which exceeds these hours on advert will be amended accordingly to fall in line with the legislation * * Please note if the successful applicant is found prior to the closing date the vacancy maybe withdrawn early* *Please note candidate will be required a DBS Check* This apprenticeship is work based learning therefore most of the time you will be working at the employer's address.
