    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage rates are £4.05 an hour for 16 - 17 year olds, £5.60 an hour for 18 - 20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship(usually one day per week).

You will work alongside the farm manager to develop the range of skills and knowledge to ensure the smooth running of the farm.

Possible duties could include:

  • Daily flock checks and husbandry procedures.
  • Egg collection and grading.
  • Complete all record cards as required by Farm Manager.
  • Keep site clean and tidy.
  • Assist with bird placement and de-population.
  • Assist with minor farm maintenance.
  • Complete all daily tasks in line with company biosecurity.
  • Communicate any problems found to the Farm Manager.
  • Ensure compliance with the company Health & Safety policy.

Requirements and prospects

  • This is a physically demanding role and will involve animal husbandry.
  • Someone who is practical and can also record information accurately.
  • You must be able to follow set methods and procedures.
  • Ability to work accurately attention to detail.

Future prospects

A full-time position/progression within the organisation will be considered on completion of the 12 month apprenticeship programme.

Things to consider

•Is the place of work on a bus route? Accessibility issues? •This is an agricultural role some outdoor work will be required as well as unsociable hours; this can include early mornings/weekend work. •Many agricultural sites are located within the countryside; therefore own transport will be essential. When applying for vacancies please bear this in mind. •This work is only with poultry, no other livestock is kept at the farm. Some maintenance of the premises and simple repair of equipment may be involved with this job. •Due to Hygiene and Biosecurity you will be declined a position if you currently keep or are in contact with any poultry.

Fenton Farm Poultry is situated on the Somerset / Devon border at Holcombe Rogus, we are a family run farm specialising in poultry. 01823 672075 We also grow wheat and barley. The farm is in the Higher Level Environment Scheme to help encourage wildlife and bio-diversity. My father John Gabriel and myself, Andrew Gabriel, also have over 55 years experience of rearing turkeys, which are mainly sold at four weeks old off heat in August. We also sell Free Range Kelly Bronze and Kelly White turkeys at Christmas, which are dry plucked and hung for 10 days to enhance the flavour. We are well known for our expertise and for the quality of our birds. In addition we produce award winning mixed coloured bright pink boxes of Free Range blue/green, brown and white eggs, which are sold through various outlets Click here for photo.
