    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

This role is predominantly livestock based so needs to have a keen interest in animal husbandry and health. There will be some tractor driving roles so ideally some machinery experience required. The successful candidate will work alongside the farmers on a day-to-day basis and will attend Duchy College Stoke Climsland.

Typical tasks will include:

  • Checking stock
  • Working with automatic feeding systems
  • Cleaning – pressure washing
  • Sorting animals
  • General maintenance
  • Support with administering medicines
  • Clearing out pens
  • Scraping
  • Lime washing

Qualifications required

GCSE Maths and English at grade D+ (or equivalent) are essential.

For the right candidate, there would be a job available upon completion of the apprenticeship.

Things to consider

The role can be physically demanding and you will be standing all day in varying weather conditions. Weekend work will be required. Shifts will vary week on week. Tractor driving licence is advantageous. You must ensure that you have suitable travel arrangements to get to and from work and college.

Newhouse Farm is a group of family run pig & arable farms. All pigs are fed with home grown cops. Main base for apprenticeship is Gelly Farm, East Taphouse where there are 2000 finishers & 1500 growers. They have a good location and are 1 minute off main road. They have 2 breeding units in Canworthy & Port Isaac.

Training provider

You will be trained in the workplace alongside your usual duties and you will be expected to attend college one day a week or on a block release basis.

You will work towards achieving a Level 2 apprenticeship in Agriculture including work-based and knowledge components, an Employee Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) qualification, Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) and, if required, Functional Skills.
