    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Initially the apprentice will be watching the plumber to learn the working practices.

The apprentice will be required to keep the tools and working area in an orderly manner so as to adhere to health and safety practices and also keep the work vehicle tidy.

The job will evolve as the apprentice gains more experience and confidence and is able to carry out task under supervision.

Your job may include the installation, maintenance. commissioning and servicing of domestic plumbing and heating systems and equipment including:

  • Installing showers, baths and sinks.
  • Drainage pipes, plastic and copper water pipes and guttering.
  • Heating systems fuelled by gas.
  • Detecting leaks.
  • Solving dimensional problems with applied maths skills when planning bathrooms.
  • Making adjustments to surrounding environment to accomodate new systems.

Qualifications required

Must have GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths grade A - C to undertake this apprenticeship.

Future prospects

There is the possibility of full time employment on successful completion of the apprenticeship.

Things to consider

The working environment will be visiting customers homes or commercial premises. Some of the work may be carried out outside and can be subject to fluctuating temperatures. Lifting of materials and carrying tools. Working in confined spaces. Must have own transport or be able to use public transport to get to business address for 8am every day. Would prefer a non-smoker.
