    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Duties are likely to include:

  • Booking appointments, shampooing, conditioning, drying and styling hair, and mixing and applying hair colouring.
  • You will study hairdressing topics such as hair and skin testing, the effects of chemicals on hair and skin, and the principles of hair colour selection. There is also the option to learn about promoting products, perming, and working with different hair types.
  • You will also be required to attend college sessions once a week to undertake additional training which will enhancing your theory and practical elements.

The ideal candidate must be friendly and approachable and have excellent communication skills. You will be able to work well in a team portray a positive friendly attitude to customers at all times.

Personal qualities

You will have excellent communication, high standards of hygiene and appearance and a keen team player are essential for any salon apprentice, and you will learn how to demonstrate this consistently to ensure that you promote a positive image at all times.

Candidates will need to be enthusiastic about training, have a creative flair and a genuine passion for the hairdressing and fashion industry. Building good relationships with clients is a vital part of a successful salon so excellent interpersonal skills are required. You will have the ability to multitask and be able to work under pressure.

Qualifications required

No prior qualifications are required, just a passion for hairdressing and ability to communicate effectively to clients and staff.

Future prospects

Once having completed the level 2 qualification, there will be an opportunity to work towards an advanced level 3 to further enhance your skills.

Things to consider

From 1st of April 2017 the National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £3.50 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 or over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. Those between the ages of 19-24 who are in their second year (or third year) need to be paid the National Minimum Wage for their age bracket. In April 2016 the new National Living Wage was implemented and therefore if you are over the age of 25 and in your second or third year of an Apprenticeship you will be entitled to be paid the National Living Wage. About the employer

Nutters was established in 1979 by Roy and Hazel Vile, prominently situated on Exeter's Exe bridges. The salon has been trading under the Nutters banner for over 35 years and continues to be a family orientated salon catering for all ages and genders. The Stylists are all professionally trained, some with over 30 years experience but, it doesn't stop there, Nutters continues to train their Stylists in the most up to date fashion trends and techniques. Nutters currently have another apprentice and are looking forward to training a new member of the team.

The Apprenticeship in Hairdressing includes:
◾Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing
◾Functional Skills in Maths and English (Level 1)
◾Emergency First Aid
◾Certified Health and Safety Course
◾Internet Safety / Safeguarding

Most aspects of the qualification will be delivered on-site and you will have regular visits every 3 to 4 weeks from your designated assessor from Skills Group, who will monitor your progression throughout your apprenticeship.

As an additional qualification Skills Group will help you achieve your Emergency First Aid and Health and Safety Certificate, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.
