    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Timber is an essential part of just about every structure, and it's the carpenter and joiner's job to prepare it and put it into place.  It's a skilled job that utilises special tools, and often involves many different kinds of wood.If you enjoy using your practical ability, have good co-ordination skills and enjoy being part of a team then a carpenter or joiner could be the ideal role for you. You will need to be good at maths as you will be calculating angles and measurements. On a day to day basis you will mainly be working on windows and doors and many other timber related structures. This work will mainly occur in shops and houses. Duties invovle:

  • Preparation of materials and tools required for carrying out specific tasks.
  • Preparing work area to protect client’s property and implementing safe work practices.
  • Maintaining tools and equipment as well as health and safety.
  • Working as a professional tradesperson using the correct PPE.
  • Must be able to take instructions from seniors to complete carpentry tasks.

  • Good punctuality and attendance is important with the ability to communicate any non-attendance or other issues.
  • The candidate must be willing to attend college one day a week and commit to the work expected from his/her college tutors.

Some works will be external therefore must be willing to work in all weathers.
