    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

This is an opportunity to work in a busy and expanding dental surgery. You will be required to:

  • To perform high quality dental nursing whilst assisting the dentists or therapist he/she has been appointed with, in a safe effective manner
  • To establish and maintan productive working relationships with all members of the dental team
  • To ensure the decontamination, surgery areas and equipment are regularly cleaned and maintained
  • To keep accurate records
  • To liaise with the practice manager on all matters concerning administration, pay and service conditions
  • Support and participate in practice meetings
  • Maintain a professional look at all times and agree to weat the practice uniform
  • To assist at reception and perform other clerical duties if required
  • Set up and prepare the surgery for the type of patient and treatment planned before the start of each session
  • Meet and greet patients in a friendly manner
  • Answer telephone calls and queries
  • Assist in ensuring reception runs smoothly

In additional to the clinical skills the following Customer Service/administrative skills will be required - to include

  • Welcoming patients/clients in a friendly and supportive manner
  • Must be customer focused with a friendly and polite disposition
  • Communicate appropriately with patients who may be fearful, vulnerable, are aggressive or have special needs I.e physical and learning disabilities
  • Deal efficiently with enquiries from patients, staff and other healthcare professionals
  • Deal with external agencies in relation to patient services on behalf of the clinicians e.g Dental laboratories
  • Liaise with senior staff to ensure all operational information is available
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the complaints procedure defusing and resolving or referring potential situations to line manager
  • Checking treatment plans prior to clinics under supervision
  • Preparing take home packs for patients

Personal qualities

The suitable candidate will be of a cheery disposition, willing, helpful and friendly.  Essentially this role is ideal for someone who is able to multi task and display their initiative. You must also be punctual and reliable.

Qualifications required

A good level of education is required

English and Maths GCSE grade A-C are desirable or a willingness to work towards achieving these grades.

If you are adverse to seeing blood this may not be a suitable role for you. The suitable candidate will be required to have a Hepitis B injection

Dental Nurse Apprenticeship

Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing to qualify for GDC registration

What will I learn? –

Reduce health and safety risks – Provide basic life support – Prepare and maintain environments, instruments and equipment for clinical dental procedures – Offer information and support to individuals on the protection on their oral health – Contribute to the production of dental images – Provide chair-side support during the extraction of teeth and minor oral surgery


You are also required to study functional skills such as maths, english and computing, as well as any additional qualifications that your employment needs.


You will be taught in the workplace completing practical activities. On day/evening release at College (sites available in Preston, Southport or Lancaster) you will take part in activities in the classroom and dental training room.


You will be assessed in one or more of the following ways: – Coursework – Oral questioning – Portfolio of evidence – Practical demonstration/assignment – Practical & online examinations
