    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

What is the job?

The role of Medical Receptionist is to primarily support the practice in carrying out day to day administrative and reception duties as required. The post holder will also be expected to cover reception in the event of staff absence or annual leave, this includes covering early starts. The position is suitable for someone who wishes to demonstrate initiative and develop their own skills. The practice has two surgeries and the post holder will be expected to work at both surgeries.

Main Job Purpose

  • To offer general assistance to the practice team and project a positive and friendly image to patients and other visitors.
  • Receive, assist and direct patients in accessing the appropriate service or healthcare professional in a courteous, efficient and effective way.
  • Undertake a variety of administrative duties to assist in the smooth running of the practice including the provision of clerical support to clinical staff and other members of the practice team.
  • To facilitate effective communication between patients, members of the practice team and other healthcare professionals.

Specific Tasks Include

  • Daily management of prescription requests ensuring queries are passed to a GP.
  • Photo copying of medical records as requested and within the required timescales.
  • Providing assistance on the reception during busy times including answering the telephone, booking appointments and dealing with general enquiries.
  • Filing and locating patient records.
  • Dealing with mobile telephone e-mail notifications.
  • New patient registrations.
  • Assisting with registration workflow tasks in the absence of the Practice Administrator.

Training requirements will be monitored by yearly appraisal. Personal development will be encouraged and supported by the practice. It is the individual';s responsibility to remain up to date with recent developments.

  • To work within the clinical computer system to improve data quality, using the expertise of other data staff where appropriate.

  • Attend practice team meetings as required (Note: these are held outside of the practice opening hours and attendance is mandatory. Time of in lieu or paid time will be given.

The post-holder will strive to maintain quality within the practice, and will:

  • Assess own performance and take accountability for own actions, either directly or under supervision.
  • Contribute to the effectiveness of the team by reflecting on own and team activities and making suggestions on ways to improve and enhance the team's performance.

Communication

The post-holder should recognise the importance of effective communication within the team and will:

  • Communicate effectively with other team members.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and carers.
  • Recognise people';s needs for alternative methods of communication and respond accordingly.

Most instruction and communication of activity will be via the practice manager or practice administrator. External communication will be with patients, Clinical Commissioning Groups and other NHS bodies, and other GP practices and service providers.

  • In the course of seeking treatment, patients entrust us with, or allow us to gather, sensitive information in relation to their health and other matters. They do so in confidence and have the right to expect that staff will respect their privacy and act appropriately.
  • In the performance of the duties outlined in this job description, the post-holder may have access to confidential information relating to patients and their carers, practice staff and other healthcare workers. They may also have access to information relating to the practice as a business organisation. All such information from any source is to be regarded as strictly confidential.
  • Information relating to patients, carers, colleagues, other healthcare workers or the business of the practice may only be divulged to authorised persons in accordance with the practice policies and procedures relating to confidentiality and the protection of personal and sensitive data.
  • Administration cover for absences and help with extra-ordinary workloads.
  • Be generally involved in the administration of a small business.

Recruitment Process

South and City College will be holding a screening and information session Week Commencing 28th August 2017. This session will be held at Hall Green Campus, Stratford Road, B28 8ES and will be part of your application process.

Successful applicants will then have a 1 to 1 interview with the respective GP Surgery of your choice, with the view to commence employment from September 2017.
