    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Things to consider

From the 1st October 2015 a National Minimum Wage (NMW) for apprentices was introduced for young people aged 16-18 and those aged over 19 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. The new rate from 1st April 2017 is £3.50 per hour. The new NMW applies to time working plus time spent training as this is also part of the Apprenticeship. Anyone not covered by the age category above will be entitled to the NMW appropriate to their age. Training on the Apprenticeships Programme for 16 to 18 year olds is a priority and fully-funded by the Government. . Training for Apprenticeships over this age is part funded, We welcome applications aged 16 to 18, but recruitment would be based on merit. We welcome applications from candidates living in the Folkestone area.
