Provide efficient and reliable chair-side support to the Dentist. The role will also require working in other areas of the practice such as Reception, dealing with patient queries, answering the phone, taking payments and booking appointments. Working towards an Advanced Apprenticeship in Dental Nursing, the ideal candidate must have an interest in a career in Dental Nursing.

In this role you will:

  • Provide chair-side assistance which includes maintaining impeccable standards of hygiene and cross infection control, preparing instrument trays for procedures and ensuring surgery management is adhered to
  • Support the Dentist in all clinical procedures (extractions, minor oral surgery, fixed and removable prosthesis, Orthodontics, nonsurgical endodontic treatment, infection control, assessment of patients’ oral health,  prevention and control of periodontal disease and tooth decay and the restoration of cavities)
  • Prepare treatments, for example, to make fillings and dental x-rays
  • Ensure cleanliness of surgery, equipment and instruments (sterilisation of instruments) used and carrying out general housekeeping duties
  • Need good communication skills and customer service awareness is needed to maintain a high level of service within the dental practice
  • Assist at the reception area, especially during busy periods. This would involve booking appointments, taking payments for treatment
  • Interact daily with patients and therefore you must be able to make patients feel welcome and offer reassurance to anxious patients endeavouring to make their experience as comfortable as possible

Qualifications required

GCSE’s A* to C in Maths and English or equivalent qualification.

Future prospects

On satisfactory completion of the apprenticeship, a permanent position will be offered. Dental nurses are required to undertake 150 hours of Continuing Professional Development over five years including some mandatory training and the practice will support the learner to do this.

Things to consider

• Before starting your apprenticeship, you would be required to undertake a Disclosing Barring Service (DBS) check; • You will be required to undertake the following immunisations where they are not current; Hepatitis B inoculation plus MMR, Hepatitis B booster; • You be exposed to bodily fluids such as blood and saliva; • A uniform will be issued; • This is a monthly paid post; • You will be entitled to receive 28 days (including Bank Holidays) annual leave.
