    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Key areas of responsibility:

  • Take responsibility for postal duties in accordance with procedures, to include opening and distribution of daily post received.  Correctly identify, differentiate and deal with DX and Royal Mail post, hand or other deliveries
  • As appropriate ensure that all stocks of consumables and toiletries are adequately maintained. 
  • Take responsibility for stationery supplies, with approval placing orders and liaising with the supplier and keeping the stationery cupboard tidy and organised
  • Deliver professional telephone handling, with the provision of accurate message taking and where possible dealing with queries without having to involve colleagues.  Messages taken to be passed on to the appropriate person without delay
  • To carry out photocopying
  • Opening and closing of files
  • Entering client information onto the computer databases
  • Dealing with filing, storage and retrieval of client’s papers and files as instructed
  • Generally assist colleagues in the office
  • Prepare and serve refreshments as and when required to clients and/or Fee Earners and to clear away and wash up afterwards
  • Banking – record cheques received each day and take cheques and cash to the bank
  • Reception – Provide reception cover on a daily basis when needed.  Duties to include answering the telephone and meeting and greeting visitors.

  • Ensure that any equipment supplied for the purpose of your work is maintained and any defects are reported
  • All employees have a responsibility to carry out their work with due regard for the environment.  The firm’s Environmental Policy and procedures relevant to your area must be followed

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

The successful candidate will ideally need:

  • Experience of working within a team environment
  • Experience of data entry and/or text processing
  • Basic knowledge of MS Office software packages
  • Some experience of customer service; direct face-to-face and telephone customer contact work would be an advantage
  • The ability to prioritise

Qualifications required
