    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.

As an apprentice with Acklam's Coaches, you will work in a bustling environment learning work based skills in line with a professional trade qualification in Bus & Coach Engineering - Body repair. Areas of learning to carry out repairs to accident damaged vehicles;

  • To carry out refurbishment repairs
  • Manufacturing Panels
  • Prepare vehicle to a point where paint can be applied
  • Maintain a clean, tidy and safe operating environment in the workshop.
  • Maintain a good working relationship with customers by keeping them advised on progress on repairs.
  • Maintain site health and safety procedures including the wearing of high viz clothing when on site
  • To be Reliable, Flexible self-motivated with a positive attitude to fellow workers and customers.

Qualifications required

GCSE's or equivalent, Functional Skills or Key Skills at grade C/Level 1 or above in English, Maths equivalent. Work experience/prior knowledge is beneficial but not essential.

Future prospects

Full training to Level 3 Standard. At the successful completion of training the intention is for the apprentice to be offered full-time employment as a skilled Bus & Coach Vehicle Maintenance Technician.

Acklam Coaches is a major bus and coach operator within the East Riding area of Yorkshire operating 55 vehicles. It is a family run company which has been in operation for more than 50 years. We provide transportation and tickets for concerts at large venues around the UK, holidays both in the UK and overseas and day trips. Training provider

Training is provided at work and in the Arriva academy in Derby or St Helens by specialist training provider S&B Automotive Academy on block release (usually six one-week blocks per year).The successful applicant will be mentored in the workplace by the employer who will support and monitor progress through the use of electronic logbook which both employer and apprentice will have access to 24/7 365 days a week.

The level 3 Apprenticeship Standard is a 3 year programme which culminates in an end point assessment.

As part of the apprenticeship the apprentice will need to achieve Functional Skills at Level 2 in Application of Number & Communication before they can complete the end point assessment.
