    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

    Generally hours are 40 per week, working 8 hours per day between 9.00am and 6.00pm – this might vary slightly depending upon which site you work at.

  • To diligently undertake training as instructed on the apprenticeship scheme.
  • To rapidly become a productive member of the kitchen teams producing top quality food.
  • To assist in ensuring the smooth operation of the kitchen.


  • Undertake all training required within the apprenticeship.
  • Attain the technical knowledge required.
  • Attend additional training and seminars as required for the development of your role.
  • Undertake all training within an agreed time span.
  • Present any necessary written reports on time and in order  

Other duties may include;

  • Assist with the ordering of ingredients as directed.
  • Assist with the ordering of kitchen related packaging as directed.
  • Assist with the ordering of all hygiene and cleaning products for the kitchen as directed. 
  • Assist with processing supplier deliveries, including temperature checks on goods as appropriate

Stock control;

  • Assist with the monthly and annual stock counts for the kitchen
  • Assist with the recoding and monitoring of all wastage in the bakery

HACCP procedures;

  • Ensure correct procedure are followed regarding checking and recording of food temperatures
  • Ensure high standards are achieved in the kitchen and maintained at all times
  • Undertake regular cleaning in the bakery
  • Ensure that the kitchen and equipment is left clean and tidy at the end of each working day and that this is duty recorded in the ‘End of day’ HACCP log in the absence of the head chef or second chef
  • Adhere to the catering health and safety guidelines and wear the appropriate safety protection clothing provided, as required, at all times

Qualifications required

  • You should have a reasonable level of Maths & English Qualifications. Ideally GCSE or equivalent grades A*-C/9-4.
  • Otherwise you will need to complete a functional skills assessment prior to commencing your apprenticeship, you will also need to work towards these qualifications alongside your apprenticeship (you will be fully supported to do this)

Future prospects

We will guarantee a job at the end of the apprenticeship subject to satisfactory performance.

Things to consider

There is a regular bus service around the area however, please take time to consider how you will to work each day. Your working hours are likely to include weekend, evening and bank holidays as is usual within the industry. The Chatsworth Estate operates year round.
