As an apprentice within Financial Services, the key duties and responsibilities will be to assist and take direction from fully qualified accountants and other team leaders for the duration of their apprenticeship. It may be appropriate to include exposure to the following areas as part of this work experience:

  • To carry out a range of financial and clerical duties associated with the Accountancy Teams core purposes, as directed by line management.
  • Provide support in the preparation of the Council’s budgets and the compilation of financial returns, culminating in the production of the annual Budget, Statement of Accounts, or MTFP (Our Money).
  • Assist in the maintenance and knowledge sharing of the financial aspects of the Council’s standing orders and financial procedure rules.
  • Ensure that a continuous improving approach to service delivery is maintained.
  • To provide support to all areas of the Financial Services team as and when required to ensure a flexible and proactive delivery of service.
  • To remain appraised of all current legislation and technical standards and codes in respect of identified duties of the role.
  • To undertake tasks on the Council’s financial system, Agresso, including data input, analysis and retrieval.
  • To undertake studies for Association of Accounting Technicians and complete assessments / exams as required by the Association, seeking first-time passes at each relevant stage.

The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year. Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year. The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over. Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).
