    The current National Minimum Wage rates are £4.05 an hour for 16 - 17 year olds, £5.60 an hour for 18 - 20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship(usually one day per week).

The role includes:

  • Taking instruction from the dentist in surgery and responding efficiently and accurately
  • Preparing the surgery and any relevant materials in advance of treatments, taking care to sterilise all instruments and decontaminate working areas
  • Ensure the correct dental instruments are to hand ready to be passed to the dentist when needed and materials have been mixed if required
  • Ensure the dentist’s comments regarding the patient’s oral condition are correctly recorded throughout the check-up
  • Tidy and clean the surgery once treatments are complete in preparation for the next day/session
  • Adhere strictly to infection control procedures within the practice
  • Attend the reception desk welcoming patients to the practice, booking appointments, taking payments and answering telephone calls
  • Assist in administration tasks and ensure records are kept up to date in line with Date Protection
  • General housekeeping duties
  • Good communication skills and customer service awareness is needed to maintain a high level of service within the dental practice
  • Being in close contact with the patients is a daily requirement for a dental nurse therefore you must be able to make patients feel welcome and offer reassurance to anxious patients endeavouring to make their experience as comfortable as possible
  • Working sometimes under pressure; dental nurses must remain professional and work quickly and efficiently
  • Patient confidentiality must be maintained at all times

Qualifications required

Ideally five GCSEs, two of which must be Maths and English GCSEs at grades A-C or equivalent.

Future prospects

Upon completion of the Dental Nursing Diploma there will be a permanent full time position for the successful candidate. Once qualified you can register as a dental nurse with the General Dental Council. You can also go on to study further dental related qualifications at Level 4 such as Radiography and Oral Health Education.

Things to consider

You will be active all day, have to adhere to strict infection control standards, you will have to deal with blood, saliva and some patients may be extremely nervous. Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage (ANMW): The National Minimum Wage for Apprentices is £3.50 per hour from 1st April 2017. This is the legal minimum pay per hour applying to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their apprenticeship. For apprentices 19 or over who have completed their first year and are continuing their apprenticeship, the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies.

About the employer

Training provider

Work based  training and support towards achieving an Advanced Apprenticeship in Dental Nursing consisting of Functional Skills in Maths and English at level 2 and the level 3 diploma in Dental Nursing. Successful completion will allow the candidate to register with the General Dental Council. You will also complete the First Aid at Work qualification.
