As an Apprentice you will receive in-depth on the job training which will lead to a nationally accredited qualification and the experience will open up many future opportunities for you.

The purpose of your role will be to develop both professionally and personally whilst learning within our Forest Products Team. This 12 arce site provides stockholding, timber processing e.g milling and preservative treatment, and distribution to all Merchant branches of the Ridgeons Group. 

The Role

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • To work in designated departments, branches or locations in accordance with your development plan
  • Process timber i.e. milling and preservative treating  
  • Assist with Stockholding 
  • Liasie with Merchant branches and assist with deliveries 
  • Ensure we follow the correct processes and procedures to complete allocated tasks and maintain high levels of accuracy
  • Comply fully with all health and safety policies and be proactive in ensuring a safe working environment
  • Complete all required work and training related to your qualification within agreed timescales

** Please note exact hours may vary slightly depending on which placement you are undertaking at the time. Occasional Saturday work may be required**

English and Maths GCSE A*-C or equivalent is preferred.

Things to consider

Please ensure you give as much detail as possible with your application and check your commute time/method. The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year. Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year. The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over. Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week). For more information visit:

Completing a Machine Woodworking Apprenticeship Lv2, comprising of:

  • NVQ
  • Employer Rights and Responsibilities
  • Functional Skills

The vocational and academic training aspects are separated and delivered by separate teams.

The vocational training and assessment is conducted, more often than not, on site according to the employers wishes. Notice of dates is agreed well in advance of a site visit.

Training and assessment is conducted both on and off the job, according to the needs of the course and the learner. Every effort is made to ensure the best result is achieved by the learner.
