  • Attend one-day a week course at a College of Further Education to undertake the Intermediate Level Apprenticeship in Catering and Professional Chefs;
  • Adhere to required time schedules in preparation and cooking of foods;
  • Support, with direction,  the Head Chef/Sous Chef and Chefs on a day-to-day basis by:
  • preparing and cooking for breakfast, lunch and evening meals;
  • preparing sweets, afternoon tea cakes and desserts;
  • preparing for special College functions and private events;
  •  Acceptance and check-in of kitchen stores;
  • Putting stores away and checking dates of stock, ensuring good stock rotation;
  • Making up laundry bundles and keeping accurate records of laundry sent and received;
  • Reconciling laundry slips and rectifying any discrepancies with the Housekeeper;
  • Cleaning kitchen and food preparation areas and equipment as required;
  • Removing waste for disposal, or recycling;
  • Manual handling, to include lifting of heavy items such as laundry bundles, rubbish disposal, furniture and equipment;
  •  Ensure your actions minimise risks to Health and Safety by:
  • working safely and obeying College Health and Safety rules as set out in the College’s Health and Safety Policy, Food Safety Policy, and Staff Handbook;
  • cleaning kitchen and food preparation areas and equipment as required.

There is potential for a full time position being made available for the right candidate.

Things to consider

From the 1st October 2015 a National Minimum Wage (NMW) for apprentices has been introduced for young people aged 16-18 and those aged over 19 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. The new rate is £3.50 per hour. The new NMW applies to time working plus time spent training as this is also part of the Apprenticeship. Anyone not covered by the age category above will be entitled to the NMW appropriate to their age.
