Painting & Decoration is more involved than decorating a room in a house.  The role could vary from working on oil rigs or bridges applying heavy-duty coatings, to working in stately homes or grand hotels skillfully applying ornate decorations.

As you would expect, you will need good practical ability to succeed in this role. Most of the work is carried out indoors, but you should be prepared to work outside and travel to different sites.

Work can also range from large jobs to very intricate projects.Working as part of a team, preparation of working area, applying both emulsion and gloss paint using brush and roller.Learning processes of the building trade and understanding customer and client needs.

Duties will involve:

Painting:

  • Prepare and clean surfaces using methods such as scraping, sanding, sandblasting, hydro-blasting and steam-cleaning; remove old wallpaper and loose paint; repair cracks and holes in walls and joinery by applying fillers/ sealant. Plaster surfaces as required. Prepare/sand surface for application of decorative product
  • Mix and thin paint to obtain desired colour and texture as necessary
  • Apply paint or other materials, such as stains, lacquer, enamel, oil, varnish, fibreglass, metal coating or fire retardant using brushes, rollers or spray equipment

Wallpaper:

  • Measure, cut and apply wallpaper or fabric to walls
  • Assemble and erect scaffolding and swing gates
  • Advise manager on selection of colour schemes and choice of wall coverings

Qualifications required

  • No formal qualifications required but good standard of Maths and English would be advantageous

Things to consider

This role involves working in an outdoor environment. Must be able to meet the physical demands of the role. The successful candidate will need to be prepared to undertake all aspects of building work. Closing date may be brought forward if suitable candidate found.
