An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Clinical Assessment Service (CAS) for a Palliative Care Team Apprentice in the new Devon Integrated Urgent Care Service which is based in Exeter.

This is a fixed term post for 12 months working 40 hours per week and is an apprenticeship. This role attracts an apprenticeship rate of £3.50 per hour.

The role is varied and interesting; you will liaise with surgeries, complete administrative tasks and promote EPaCCS (End of Life Register) to the wider health care community via the telephone and email. You will also work closely with the operational teams within the Devon Doctors Control Centre.

The right candidate must have an excellent telephone manner, the ability to think on their quickly and prioritise their workload accordingly.

Successful candidates will be part of a multi-disciplinary team and this is an ideal role for those wishing to start a career in healthcare.

This is an ideal opportunity to learn within the work place; you will supported by a tutor to gain a Customer Service Level 2 qualification.

Main duties will include:

  • Answering incoming calls promptly and efficiently
  • Checking accuracy of call details and editing/amalgamating where appropriate, prior to forwarding to the dispatchers
  • Ensuring all calls which are complex or suggest an element of immediate risk are passed to an appropriate staff member/shift manager as quickly as possible
  • Providing a professional and efficient service for end of life care, which includes exercising professional judgement, sensitivity, confidentiality, support and advice when dealing with sensitive/distressing and emotional situations involving colleagues, patients and other agencies
  • Participating professionally as a key member of the Team within the CAS/CC environment
  • Supporting Clinicians working within the CAS/CC in administration of prescriptions, ensuring robust system of record keeping is maintained
  • Answering general enquiries regarding access and referral to the Service
  • Ensuring that the Palliative register is updated accurately and promptly with the information provided
  • Any other reasonable duties as requested by a manager within the Devon Doctors Group

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Good keyboard skills

Experience of working in a call centre or in a Palliative Care environment would be advantageous. This is not essential as full training will be given.

Qualifications required

  • A good general education, to a minimum of a C grade (4) GCSE level (or equivalent) in English and Maths

Things to consider

Please consider the distance of travel when applying for an apprenticeship vacancy. If you live outside of a reasonable commuting distance from the place of work an explanation of your travel plans will be expected within your application. The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year. Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year. The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over. Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).
