    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage rates are £4.05 an hour for 16 - 17 year olds, £5.60 an hour for 18 - 20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship(usually one day per week).

The Apprentice will work towards the Level 2 qualification in Professional Cookery. The duties will include:

  • Developing towards becoming a full time chef or hospitality supervisor
  • Unloading stock and stock rotation
  • Cleaning and general housekeeping
  • Helping with the daily running of the kitchen
  • Preparing cooking and presenting the food to the required standards and assisting the head chef
  • Following health and safety guidelines
  • Some front of house duties including meeting and greeting , taking orders and serving customers

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Someone who can take instruction with excellent listening skills
  • Excellent timekeeping and attendance
  • Ability to work within a team, but has the initiative to work unsupervised
  • Ability to work under pressure in a busy kitchen environment.

Personal qualities

The role will appeal to someone who is extremely passionate about becoming a chef. The successful apprentice will have high levels of personal hygiene, be extremely reliable.

Qualifications required

Good understanding of numeracy and literacy.

GCSE qualifications at grade C or above in English and maths or the ability to work towards Level 2 Functional Skills.

Future prospects

Further training and/or full time employment will be on the table for the right candidate based on performance during the Apprenticeship.

Things to consider

Pay increments are on offer throughout the year of the apprenticeship, based on performance. Please be aware that there are good transport links both trains and buses depending upon where you live. Due to the nature of the role, the Apprentice will be required to work a variety of shift patterns to include evening, weekends, and bank holidays.
