    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Looking to kick start a career in construction for yourself? We currently have some excellent opportunities  in and around the North East.

We have a great vacancy available for a number of apprentice roofers for one of our excellent employers based in Chester-le-Street. The employer works throughout the North-East in places like Washington, Newcastle, Sunderland, Gateshead etc.

You'll need:

  • To be motivated to do well
  • To be able to take direction well
  • Good practical ability

Your day-to-day tasks may include:

  • Removing or repairing broken tiles or slates
  • Checking roof timbers
  • Fitting felt sheets to roofs
  • Measuring and cutting materials
  • Covering roofs with slates, tiles or cladding
  • Cutting and fitting lead 'flashings' around chimney stacks and walls
  • Sealing roof joints with mortar

Whilst you're an apprentice, you'll receive a wage of around £100 per week whilst you're learning.

Once you've completed the apprenticeship, you'll achieve a Level 2 qualification in Roofing

A driving licence is an advantage however not essential.


Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

You don't need to have any experience in Construction as we will teach you everything from Beginners level.

Personal qualities

You'll need to be able to listen and follow instructions well. It would also be great if you're motivated to do well and want to pursue a future in Construction.

Qualifications required

There are no entry requirements for this role. However, GCSE C in Maths and English are great to have.

Future prospects

Once you've completed the 12 months apprenticeship, you could gain full time employment as a roofer or progress on to a level 3 qualification.
